Brushes
“Bottle brush” guards are made of durable bristles. They are placed in the gutters to keep leaves, twigs and other debris out of the system. The problem is leaves can get stuck on the projecting bristles. This can prevent water from draining properly, rendering the gutter brush useless.
Perforated
Installed on top of your gutters, a perforated metal gutter filter consists of tiny holes. While this type of gutter guard is great for blocking leaves, it isn’t always able to block seeds, pods and needles. When small debris gets trapped in the perforation, water can to spill over the sides. Mesh screens were developed to address the drawbacks of perforated gutter filters, but many homeowners are not satisfied with screens either as they are not good at handling heavy downpours.
Foams
Similar to brushes, foam gutter guards are inserted directly into the gutters. They are made of porous polyurethane to allow water to flow freely into the system. However, they tend to become brittle after a year or two. They also can’t filter shingle granules efficiently.
Reverse-Curve
When it comes to performance, reverse-curve gutter guards reign supreme. These solid covers have a curved edge that directs water into a narrow slit, while debris falls to the ground.
