Gutter Troubles in Spring and How to Fix Them
April 11, 2018So, you survived the cold winter, and spring has finally arrived. Should be good to feel the sun again, right? There might be issues your aluminum gutters will face once spring arrives, however. One such problem is a “spring melt,” where increasing temperatures will heat up the snow naturally. If you’re not careful, your gutters might be ill-prepared and end up trapping the melted water on your roof.
Read on to learn how to fix these issues:
Clogged Debris
The snow stuck in your gutters could slow or stop water from flowing to your downspouts. Debris in your gutters can also come from leaves and twigs that have broken off of surrounding trees during the winter. You can prevent these clogs by installing gutter filters that stop debris from entering your gutters.
Cracking or Bending
Another issue to consider comes either before or during the spring melt. When the snow piles up, its cumulative weight could cause the gutters to break or bend. This will affect the water flow by either trapping it or unloading it on your roof. Moisture could rot the wooden components of your roof and lead directly to leaks, as well as mold and mildew issues.
Solution: Heat It Up
To prevent this from happening, the best solution is to heat the gutter. At Gutter Helmet of Eastern NY, we can install our Helmet Heat® wiring system directly to the gutter cap. Once installed, you can turn it on to heat up and melt the snow. This will help the melted water flow naturally and avoid snow from piling up and causing ice dams.
