The Helmet Heat prevents ice from building on your roof by melting ice and keeping it flowing down your downspouts. The system also ensures your downspouts don’t suffer from unnecessary and expensive water damage.

Put your hand near the cable where it’s installed in the downspout. If you can feel warmth and the breaker is set to the ON position, everything’s in working order.

There are a few reasons for this, including:

• An especially low wind chill factor
• Severely cold temperatures
• You didn’t turn the Helmet Heat system on before the ice started to accumulate
• The system hasn’t had enough time to start working

If your roof still has snow on it, it’s best to leave the Helmet Heat system on. Continuously activating and deactivating the system during a snowfall is likely to lead to the formation of damaging icicles and ice dams.
