4 Fixes for Drafty Windows
If you have drafty windows, the first option you have is to replace the windows. We estimate that high-performance Renewal by Andersen® replacement windows with Low-E4® SmartSun™ glass can cut your energy bill by 25%! If window replacement is not an option right now due to budget constraints, here are other budget-friendly fixes.
- Weatherstripping. Use weatherstripping (available at home improvement stores) to seal air leaks around windows and doors. To determine how much weatherstripping to purchase, calculate the perimeter of all units, then add 10% to accommodate installation waste.
- Plastic film. Another fix for window drafts is shrinkable clear plastic film applied with double-sided tape and then sealed using the heat from a hair dryer. This method can help a room retain up to 55% of its heat. The film can also be easily removed when warmer weather arrives.
- Draft stopper. Use a window draft stopper to prevent cold air from creeping indoors. These fabric tubes are often filled with sand, heavy clay, rice or beans to stand strong against drafts.
- Window treatments. Heavy insulating window treatments offer another layer of protection against draftiness in winter and heat gain in summer. Multiple layers of tightly fitted blinds, shades and drapes increase effectiveness.
