A Brief History of Gutters
March 24, 2017Gutters play an important role in protecting your home from water damage. Did you ever wonder how gutters were invented in the first place? The first gutters were made of unconventional materials and served different functions. Here, Huff ‘N Puff, expert in replacement gutters, gives a brief history of their origin.
Early Gutter Systems
The Indus Valley civilization, which thrived from 3000 BC to 1500 BC, built gutters out of burnt clay, though their gutters had fewer capabilities than the modern ones we see today. Between 27 BC and 14 AD, the Romans introduced a new type of gutter system. Water management was so important to the Roman’s that they named a goddess of sewers, Gloacina.
The rise of the Norman Empire during the 10th to 13th century brought a shift in architecture, including incorporating stone roofs and parapets on homes. During this period, gargoyles became part of the dominant gutter system. Cast iron became an abundant and less expensive material during the early 1700s, eventually replacing lead as the main material for gutter construction. During this period, both public and private properties started using wooden gutters, a trend that continued into the 20th Century.
Modern Gutter Systems
The gutter system that we know today was brought about by new technologies and better materials. With the introduction of metal rolling machineries came the half-round steel gutters that you commonly see on buildings.
